Dear prospective delegates, teachers, and guests, 

My name is Jean-Michel Garzon Mahecha, and I am honoured to serve as HSMUN 2027’s Secterary-General! This year is a big one, as we are celebrating 25 years of HSMUN.

If my math is correct, I was -5 years old when HSMUN first began. It’s amazing to see how much this organization has grown, and how much it means to so many people.

I remember the first time I heard about HSMUN, 7 years ago, and honestly it didn’t really intrigue me. On paper, it was just another debate extra-curricular with a time commitment that encroached on my studies. But, as I attended meetings, prepared for the conference, and bonded with other students over our nerdy takes of different topics, I realized there was more to this. There was a certain level of whimsy, reciprocal respect, and joy; HSMUN became a haven for people who loved politics and didn’t want to be judged for it.

Well, I clearly liked it, hence why I’ve been around for 7 years. I’ve done many great things in my life, but my greatest joy is seeing past delegates find their spark, use their voice and HSMUN experience to go out and change the world.

This is why, my Secretariat team and I, are so incredibly excited to make HSMUN 2027 happen. You all deserve a space to debate, learn, and shape what politics is… and what it will be. Can’t wait to see you all in February.
