Position papers are due on February 13, 2025 at 11:59PM in order to be considered eligible for an award. Paper submissions and other committee-specific inquiries can be sent to hsmun.press@gmail.com.

  • HSMUN includes a Press department that allows for delegates to report on the different committees that make up HSMUN. Delegates are assigned both a committee and a news network, which they then research before the conference. During the conference, they will report on the dialogue and resolutions they observe in a few ways, depending on which role they select. This includes: writing in HSMUN’s own newspaper The Daily Delegate, asking delegates questions during Press Scums, giving instant reporting on HSMUN websites, and potentially taking part in interviewing our keynote speaker.

This year's networks will be The New York Times, South China Morning Post, Russia Today, and BBC News. Click here to read more about the News Networks or scroll down.

  • Before the conference, each delegate is required to write a one to two (1-2) page summary (including sources) of the issues present in their committee, as well as information about their assigned network. They will then write a minimum of four (4) articles, summarizing the events of their committee during committee sessions. These articles are around 400 words and are edited in part, by HSMUN Press Volunteers before they are published in The Daily Delegate. Delegates will also have the opportunity to conduct a Press Scrum during their committee, where they will be able to ask delegates questions based on the events in their committee.

  • Specialized Press Delegates are those who report on the issues in the Security Council and Future Security Council. The responsibilities for these delegates includes all those listed under the General Press Delegates section. Additionally, these delegates will be utilizing our developing instant reporting strategy, HSMUN X, to give live commentary and updates from their committees on our website. This instant reporting will also include pre-made updates that give information about the upcoming crisis in each of the Security Council's.

Network Policy Documents

This is a good starting point for your research about the topic at hand. It contains information about the topics, the perspectives of each network on the topic, as well as useful links for further investigation. Network Policy Documents for HSMUN 2025 will be released closer to the date of the conference.

  • The British Broadcasting Company (BBC) was founded over 100 years ago in 1922 as a private corporation for British radio, before becoming a public corporation in 1927. Due to this, it held monopolies on both television and radio in Great Britain until 1954, and 1972 respectively.

The network's headquarters are located in London, United Kingdom. It also has studios across the world, including in China, India and South Africa.

  • After becoming a public corporation, the company has since been owned by the British Government, operating under royal charter. The British Monarch to this day still appoints the personnel of a twelve member trust to oversee day-to-day operations. Roughly ¾’s of their £5 billion annual income comes from a government license fee, with the rest coming from commercial subsidiaries.

  • While the BBC’s main focus is on serving the needs of the United Kingdom in their reporting, they cover a wide variety of topics. Their affiliate, BBC World, reports on news all around the world. This includes politics, sports, business and technology to name a few. They currently report in 40 languages worldwide and are available in more than 200 countries and territories.

The BBC is viewed as having a mostly central reporting and is viewed as a highly reputable source of information. Their word and story choice is sometimes characterized as slightly left leaning, but minimally so. Their mission statement is “to provide impartial news and information to help people understand and engage with the world around them”.

The New York Times

  • The Times was established in 1851 as a penny paper that would avoid sensationalism and report the news in a restrained and objective fashion. It enjoyed early success as its editors set a pattern for the future by appealing to a cultured, intellectual readership instead of a mass audience. The Times is headquartered at The New York Times Building in Midtown Manhattan.

  • Since 1896, the company has been chaired by the Ochs-Sulzberger family, whose current chairman and the paper's publisher is A. G. Sulzberger. The New York Times Company has 818 institutional owners and shareholders; Largest shareholders include Vanguard Group Inc, BlackRock Inc., Farallon Capital Management Llc, T. Rowe Price Investment Management, and more. The New York Times is also funded by subscriptions and advertising.

  • The New York Times covers domestic, national, and international news, and publishes opinion pieces, investigative reports, and reviews. Story selection is typically balanced; however, wording tends to lean left in most cases. Editorials on the NYT almost always favor the left and sometimes are inaccurate; see failed fact checks below. The New York Times still qualifies for High Factual status due to the incredible amount of stories they publish, but the left-leaning bias has increased from the previous update.

The NYT looks at the issues from a progressive perspective and is regarded as “liberal.” According to a Pew Research Centers’ media polarization report, “the ideological Placement of Each Source’s Audience” places the audience for the New York Times as “consistently liberal.” Further, since 1960 The New York Times has only endorsed Democratic Presidential Candidates.

South China Morning Post

  • Founded in 1903 by Australian Chinese revolutionary Tse Tsan-tai and British journalist Alfred Cunningham, the South China Morning Post (SCMP) is a Hong Kong-based English-language newspaper. SCMP provides news, business, arts, tech, and culture for global readers, focusing on China and Asia. According to its about page, the South China Morning Post’s mission is to “Lead the global conversation about China.” SCMP is also Hong Kong’s newspaper of record and publishes fashion magazines, including Harper’s Bazaar, Cosmopolitan, Elle, Esquire, and The Peak. The SCMP prints paper editions in Hong Kong and operates an online news website that is blocked in mainland China.

  • The South China Morning Post is owned by Alibaba Group and published by South China Morning Post Publishers Limited. It is funded through advertising and subscriptions.

  • News, opinions, infographics and videos on China issues: geopolitics, diplomacy, economy, technology and lifestyle. SCMP’s vision is to “Elevate Thought” and our mission is to “Lead the global conversation about China”.

These media sources have a slight to moderate liberal bias.  They often publish factual information that utilizes loaded words (wording that attempts to influence an audience by using appeal to emotion or stereotypes) to favor liberal causes.  These sources are generally trustworthy for information but may require further investigation.

This Years News Outlets:

Russia Today

  • With its first international news channel launched in 2005, Russia Today (RT) is now a global, round-the-clock news network of eight TV channels, broadcasting news, current affairs, and documentaries, with digital platforms in six languages and sister news agency RUPTLY. Russia Today also known as RT is an English-language channel in Moscow, Russia. It is on all the time and broadcasts from its offices in Moscow.

  • ANO “TV-Novosti,” owns RT News, which the Russian Government funds. The network is funded through advertising and 307 million USD from the Russian Government as of 2016.

  • Russia Today has round-the-clock news channels in English, Arabic, Spanish, and documentary channel RT Doc, in English and Russian, broadcast from Moscow, while RT America airs from Washington, RT UK from London, and RT France from Paris. Today, RT is available in more than 100 countries spanning five continents. Critics of RT claim they are a source of disinformation and pro-Russian propaganda. In review, RT News presents news that is generally in line with the Russian Government’s narrative. When it comes to covering USA/International News, they provide right-of-center coverage.  They are highly biased in favor of Russia.

In general, most international news stories on RT are factual and relate to actual events; however, there are occasional pieces that spin these facts into a different narrative that is misleading. Another concerning aspect of RT is they do not list author information for articles published on the website. This presents a lack of transparency that makes it difficult to verify the information.
