FAQs

  • The University of Alberta High School Model United Nations Conference is an opportunity for high school students to assume the role of delegates in simulated high-level meetings of United Nations committees including the Security Council and the General Assembly. Students research their country’s foreign policy position ahead of time, and then work in mock multilateral committees of approximately 80 delegates to draft, deliberate, and vote upon United Nations resolutions seeking solutions to global problems.

  • HSMUN 2023 will be held at the University of Alberta, public health restrictions permitting.

  • The conference will be held the Thursday-Friday-Saturday of February 22-24.

  • The cost for the conference is $100.00 per delegate.

For students experiencing financial difficulties, there are opportunities to receive a partial or full fee waiver. Fee subsidy application forms can be found on our website under the ‘Resources’ page.

  • Out-of-city schools are responsible for finding their own accommodations in Edmonton.

  • There will be no bag storage or coat checks at HSMUN. Delegates are responsible for managing their belongings. Most delegates bring a small-medium sized briefcase, back pack, or tote bag that they feel comfortable placing under their desk or seat.

  • Delegates are not required to bring any specific belongings - just a positive attitude and readiness to learn! Some recommended items include:

    1) Paper/pen

    2) Research tools (e.g., a computer, tablet, a textbook, printed resources)

    3) A water bottle

    4) A bag lunch or money to purchase lunch (see the conference schedule for more information on provided meals)

    5) Appropriate attire (see the dresscode for more information)

  • All delegates are encouraged to write a Position Paper in order to research their committee, topic, and foreign policy beforehand. However, Position Papers are required for “red” countries (key players on the committee). For a reminder on which countries are red, please review the country matrix (at the top of the website: Committees —> 2023 Country Matrix). If a red country does not submit a Position Paper, they will not be able to vote during their committee session until they do so. Also, please note, to be considered for an award, delegates must submit a Position Paper by the deadline.
