Alberta’s Premier Model United Nations Conference
UNIVERSITY OF ALBERTA
HIGH SCHOOL MODEL UNITED NATIONS
The Twenty-Fourth Annual Session | February 20-22, 2025 | Hosted at the University of Alberta
Dear prospective delegates, teachers, and guests,
It is my distinct honor and privilege to serve as the Secretary General of HSMUN 2025. On behalf of the Secretariat team, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the twenty-fourth session University of Alberta High School Model United Nations (HSMUN), located in Edmonton, Alberta.
Since its inception in 2002, HSMUN has provided an environment to foster valuable soft skills in high school students, such as negotiation, diplomacy, and public speaking skills through a weekend of high quality debate in a United Nations simulation. We strive to stimulate students with space to approach modern challenges and confront these challenges with a novel perspective. In the past two decades of existence, our conference has flourished into being the premier Model United Nations experience in the Greater Edmonton area.
I have been involved in Model UN for nine years, and it has personally been one of the most rewarding experiences to date. It has taught me to speak, to listen, to collaborate, and to lead. Myself, along with the Secretariat team, are dedicated to working tirelessly in order to provide students with an enriching experience in pursuit of diplomatic consciousness and intellectual growth. We have designed our committees programme to encapsulate a wide breadth of global affairs concerning the past, present, and the future.
I anticipate a weekend full of invigorating debate, lasting friendships, and above all, a shared pursuit of innovative resolutions to international challenges. Rest assured, the Secretariat and Staff team are committed to preparing for an unforgettable conference.
Sincerely,
Tristen Wong
Secretary General
HSMUN 2025
Our History
Our Mission
Founded by Dr. Andy Knight in 2002, the High School Model United Nations (HSMUN) strives to provide students in high school with an educational opportunity to develop a sense of global citizenship and maximize their self-growth. The Conference is held at the University of Alberta Campus, and is run entirely by University student volunteers. For some delegates, HSMUN is the first time they set foot on the UofA campus. For many, it is their first introduction to the University that they will call home during their future Undergraduate education and beyond. The UofA is an integral piece of HSMUN’s identity, and our volunteers are proud to welcome over 700 high school student delegates to campus each year.
By participating in the HSMUN conference, students gain confidence in public speaking, diplomacy, and policy creation. Through involvement in committee debates, students are able to network with other passionate and driven high school students from throughout Alberta. They also gain an appreciation for the crucial role of the United Nations in combatting real-world issues than threats.
